Prioritizing Homelessness Starts With A Call for Accountability Nationwide
America has transformed into a vast playground where legislation is formed by the desires of the majority of the voters — rather than being grounded in notions of right or wrong. The democratic values that underpin the nation have given rise to a system that prioritizes the will of the people above all else. This approach ensures that the majority interests are represented and has its drawbacks. The emphasis on popular opinion can sometimes lead to legislation that may not necessarily be morally or ethically sound, or may not be more important than subjects less talked about.
This dynamic nature of the country’s legislative process reflects the continuous evolution of societal norms and values, allowing for the adaptation of laws to the changing needs and desires of its citizens.
Just What Are Those Desires?
The most concerning issues for American voters are dynamic and subject to fluctuation. These concerns vary based on the prevailing social, economic and political climate of the time. For example, in recent years, Roe V. Wade/abortion rights have been a top concern for many voters. The economy and the rising costs of inflation, access to affordable insurance and the quality of immigration have been key factors in shaping public opinion. Similarly, issues such as LBGTQ+ rights, jobs, inequality, climate change and national security have all been significant concerns for voters at different points in time.
The fluctuation of these concerns can be attributed to various factors. Economic conditions, for instance, can greatly influence the priorities of voters. During times of economic downturn, job security and economic stability may become more pressing concerns. In contrast, during periods of economic growth, voters may shift their focus to other issues, such as education or environmental sustainability.
The Senate Republican candidate supported by Donald Trump, Bernie Moreno, who emerged victorious in an intense primary contest in Ohio last week, remained mum when questioned if he felt that the former president was cheated out of the 2020 election.
“The people in Ohio, what they care about is when they go to McDonald’s, they can’t afford French fries.” Wow, you mean to tell me that getting a cheaper price of french fries at McDonald’s is more important than knowing if we should vote for a candidate that has his party believing that the election was stolen — from him and the American People?
Morano went on to say: “I don’t think people think about this topic.” That should tell you everything you need to know about a candidate and how they think when governing. Moreno is not alone because both parties are guilty of this horrible way of governing their jurisdiction.
Left Behind at the Polls
The 2023 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR), Part 1, which offers estimates of homelessness in the United States, was released by HUD on December 15. According to the 2023 study, there were an estimated 653,100 homeless persons on a single night in 2023, a 12% rise over 2022 — or roughly 70,650 more people.
With those disturbing results, homelessness should be just as important as the economy, abortion, immigration and any other concern to American voters for several reasons. As a moral responsibility: Homelessness is a humanitarian crisis that affects the most vulnerable members of society. It is a reflection of systemic inequalities and societal failures. As compassionate individuals, we have a moral responsibility to address the needs of those experiencing homelessness and to work toward solutions that provide them with safe and stable housing.
Homelessness also has economic consequences that should concern voters as it becomes a burden on public resources including healthcare, emergency services and the criminal justice system. Investing in programs and policies that address homelessness can reduce these costs and create a more efficient and equitable society that undermines social stability and cohesion.
Why Do Politicians Show Little Concern About the Unhoused?
It is important to approach the issue of politicians’ lack of concern about homelessness with a broader perspective. While it may be true that some politicians may not prioritize homelessness due to a perceived lack of concern from the American people, it is not fair to solely blame them for this situation. The role of politicians is multifaceted, and they must address a wide range of issues and concerns — raised by their constituents.
Moreover, public opinion about the unhoused has been shaped by various factors, including media coverage, personal experiences and public discourse, as well as if the American people haven’t illustrated insufficient concern about unhoused issues due to a lack of awareness or understanding of the complex factors contributing to homelessness and its impact on society. Therefore, it is crucial to engage in public education and awareness campaigns to foster empathy and understanding among the general public.
Furthermore, addressing homelessness requires collaborative efforts from multiple stakeholders, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, community leaders and individuals. It is not solely the responsibility of politicians to address this issue. By fostering a collective sense of responsibility and advocating for change at all levels of society, we can create a more compassionate and effective response to homelessness.
In my diligent efforts, I have taken the initiative to spearhead a worldwide campaign advocating for the mandate of future political leaders to prioritize homelessness. Recognizing the urgent need to address this pressing issue, I firmly believe that by making homelessness a top priority, politicians can play a crucial role in bringing about meaningful change and improving the lives of those affected by homelessness.
Through this campaign, Mandate Future Politicians to Prioritize Homelessness, we aim to raise awareness about the severity and complexity of homelessness and its detrimental effects on individuals, families and communities. By highlighting the human stories behind the statistics, we hope to foster empathy and understanding among political leaders, encouraging them to take proactive measures to combat homelessness.
In conclusion, my campaign aims to galvanize political leaders worldwide to make homelessness a top priority.
By raising awareness, advocating for sustainable solutions and fostering collaboration, we can create a future where homelessness is effectively addressed and individuals can access the resources and support they need to thrive.
