Buttigieg Most Popular. Harris Appears to be Undesirable. Porter Strongest Write-In Option.
In our most recent straw poll, conducted primarily on Twitter, Pete Buttigieg came out on top when we asked this question: “As of today, if Biden didn’t run, who’d be your Democrat of choice in 2024?”
We offered four options: Gavin Newsom, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg and Gretchen Whitmer. Twitter limits polls to four options, so we also asked respondents to reply with their choice if it was not on the list. In addition to Twitter, we also offered Facebook and email as options for responding to the poll. After over 3,300 responses, the results were as follows:
We should note that this must be viewed as a poll of our followers, which we know tend to be left of center, well educated and registered voters. It simply measures sentiment at a given point in time, and it’s reasonable to assume that if more than four clickable options had been available, the results would likely be a bit different. So we don’t look at this as scientific evidence of who will run or who should run, but there are indeed some learnings from it.
The Big Takeaways?
- Buttigieg Wins. We have to first acknowledge that Buttigieg came out on top. He did so even among those that responded off of Twitter. In addition, dozens of people who voted for other options also sent messages telling us that they like Buttigieg, but they feel he is not quite ready yet, citing 2028 as his time to run. In short, his popularity can’t be ignored.
- Harris Not Popular. As has been noted by many talking heads, Kamala Harris has been a bit of non-factor in the first two years of the Biden administration. Our poll certainly suggests that the masses have taken notice and sentiment for her does not appear to be improving. While not significant in numbers, several respondents also called for her to be replaced as Biden’s running mate if he runs in 2024. Read Terry Schwadron’s recent opinion piece on Harris, HERE.
- Katie Porter On the Rise. Outside of the four main choices we offered, Porter garnered more support than any other write-in choice, with nearly 200 taking the time to reply to us with her name. That’s significant.
- Biden Is Our Guy. Finally, sentiment for Biden as the candidate is still strong, despite his ongoing setbacks related to classified documents. We say this due to the many comments we received telling us that our poll was “useless” or “unnecessary” since Biden will be running and is the only option that should be considered.
