In the latest installment of Reality Check, DCReport’s co-founder and Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist David Cay Johnston delivers a chilling warning about what he calls “Donald Trump’s emerging dictatorship.”
Johnston reveals that Trump has ordered the U.S. military to blow up boats in international waters—vessels he claims are carrying drugs from Venezuela. These attacks, Johnston says, have no legal authorization and have resulted in the deliberate killing of people without arrest, trial, or due process.
“It’s murder, and yes, I mean that word murder,” Johnston declares. “The proper description of what Donald Trump has ordered is murder.”
Johnston reminds viewers that the penalty for drug trafficking is imprisonment, not execution. The U.S. has long handled such cases through lawful interdiction and prosecution—not summary executions at sea.
This latest escalation, Johnston warns, should alarm every American who believes in the rule of law:
“If Donald Trump gets away with this kind of murder on the high seas, do you think he’ll hesitate to kill anyone he decides he doesn’t like?”
