More Writers. Expanded Coverage. Same Quality Nonprofit Journalism.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been six years since I collaborated with David Crook to start DCReport. We did so as a public service, to provide a voice for fact-based journalism and opinion about our government.
Since then, our nonprofit newsroom has carved out a strong niche and readership by uncovering the stories that the mainstream media ignores or completely misses altogether. Along the way, we’ve certainly broken some big ones, and brought to light important facts, all in the name of protecting your rights as citizens, consumers, workers, investors, and voters. To say the least, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished.
Throughout, we have referred to our government because we own it and believe we should act like owners, not renters or squatters. That simple act of not referring to the government goes to our belief in accountability.
I’m also excited about the future and to announce a new path that we’ll soon be following to secure that future for our nonprofit journalism efforts so they will flourish for many years to come.
For me, it’s time to take a step back after nearly 55 years of daily journalism. Thus, beginning in January, DCReport will be in the very capable hands of the Next Echo Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that has published the online magazine Cultural Daily for more than a decade. Although I’ll be stepping down as editor-in-chief, I’ll remain as an advisor and occasional contributor. So will David Crook, who has been our managing editor.

What does the change mean? You’ll still get DCReport’s trademark brand of reporting and perspective. You’ll start to see some new reporting and new journalists in the coming months. DCReport’s aim to “report what they do, not what they say” will continue—and expand.
America is at an inflection point right now, and it’s the time for smart and forward-looking reporting, perspectives, and voices not usually given platform in the clamor of talking-heads TV and click-bait websites. It’s the time to move DCReport to its new chapter.
To give us a great launch to 2023 and beyond, I’m asking for your generous donation. As always, your donation will go to the 501(c)3 non-profit foundation publishing DCReport, so it will be tax-deductible as the law permits, and 100% of your generosity will go to further the purpose and continued excellence of DCReport.
Thank you for your commitment these past five years, and for your continuing commitment to a clear-eyed and well-reported view of our world.
Sincerely,
David Cay Johnston
